Recognizing these challenges, iNStep developed a comprehensive six-module online learning program that addressed Fairfield's compliance standards while enhancing learner engagement and retention.
We divided the content into manageable micro-lessons within each module, allowing learners to progress at their own pace and reinforcing key concepts through repetition. To cater to the diverse audience, iNStep employed a visually-rich design approach, incorporating Fairfield's branding elements and providing visual feedback cues to aid learner comprehension and reinforce learning.
"We knew the key to this one was going to be giving the learners opportunities to be hands-on and actually practice building and interpreting safety labels," said Nicole Stephens, iNStep's Founder. "Just being read to was not making the learning stick once employees completed the training and returned to the job site - and this introduced safety concerns. To that end, we provided several interactive activities that got learners actively involved in building labels and thinking about safety protocol."
Interactive elements like real-life safety challenges allowed learners to reveal additional information or feedback after attempting the challenge. We also integrated hints into the activities so that users could control their difficulty level, like allowing learners to reveal a legend for guidance if needed when building a hazard label.
In content-heavy sections, iNStep organized information in flip-panels, presenting it in a structured yet flexible manner. Learners could spend more time on panels covering concepts they needed to reinforce and less time on familiar content. This self-directed approach allowed learners to chunk the material and control the flow of information.
To ensure understanding, we integrated regular formative assessments, enabling learners to gauge their comprehension and identify areas for improvement.
Critically, iNStep involved Fairfield's associates in usability testing throughout the development process. Stephens recounts, "During alpha testing, we noticed users hesitating at a particular section, indicating confusion. By isolating that area and adding clarifying on-screen instructions, users sailed through seamlessly in the beta phase."
The final solution integrated with Fairfield's existing learning management system, enabling broad deployment and tracking of learner progress.
